A gharial measuring around 7 to 8 feet was found dead in the Chambal river, on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The exact reasons behind the death are not known till now.

The gharial had reportedly died two-three days back in the Chambal river. The area from where the mortality has been reported is situated at some distance from the Chambal bridge. The reason of death of the gharial is not known but locals claim that illegal mining has been going on for years on the banks of Chambal river, which is disturbing the ecology in the area.

Forest Range Officer from Sheopur SS Khare on the issue said that the gharial had died around two-three days back in the Chambal river on the border of MP and Rajasthan. The Rajasthan forest officials have been informed about its death, said Khare.

The Ranger however declined having the knowledge of the exact reasons which brought about the mortality. He said that 8 or 10 days back, another gharial had died after getting entangled in a fishing net.

Meanwhile, due to a large number of gharials in the river, which flows through MP, UP and Rajasthan borders, the area is known as the Chambal Sanctuary. The Government is spending lakhs of rupees on the conservation of gharials.

Recently, the Central Government had decided to establish a Gharial Protection Authority for taking care of the endangered gharials in Chambal river, which stretches through the boundaries of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Centre has also announced for establishing a sanctuary for gharials, which would be spread over an area of 1,600 sq km.

The proposed sanctuary would be aimed at protecting the species from extinction. Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh had made the announcement in this regard during a visit to Chennai recently.

The Centre has proposed the conservation of gharials through a three-State authority. The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has approved the proposal and has allotted ` 8 crore for this project. According to officials figures of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, at present, there were only 200 breeding adult gharials and their total population in the wild would be a around 1,400. The proposed sanctuary is expected to help stabilise the population of this endangered species.
